To reduce cost and improve speed Google Cloud, in partnership with STS, built an AI-based corrosion-detection system for the U.S. Navy, which will automate inspections of vessels.

This AI-based corrosion detection and analysis system has the potential to support other groups beyond the federal government. It can detect and analyze corrosion on vessels with 90% accuracy. Currently expanding to other platforms, including aircraft and vehicles. If successful, it could be a game-changer for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to stem the tide of corrosion.

National Institute of Ageing (NIA)

To achieve this, they worked with Google Cloud to design and build an external platform named dot maps that would help with coordination and was easy to use.

The tool is made with Google Maps Platform and Google Cloud Platform. It helps the City keep track of the work, avoid fights, save money, and improve the quality of life by cutting down on unnecessary roadwork and easing traffic congestion. Dot maps solve a big problem for city officials and planners: making sure that public and private construction projects don’t overlap. It gives people collaborative tools to do tasks and solve overlaps using geolocation in real-time.

California Child Support Services

With the help of a network of 50 county and regional local child support organizations, California Child Support Services connects children and their families with the financial and medical support mandated by the court. 

Parental location, paternity determination, child support, and enforcement, and health insurance coverage determination and enforcement are all part of the services offered.

With help from Microsoft Consulting Services, California Child Support Services updated its on-premises Child Support Enforcement (CSE) business system. They are now better able to do their job to improve children’s health and safety because they can pay Californian families faster than ever. 

California Child Support Services worked with Microsoft Consulting Services to move their on-premises Child Support Enforcement (CSE) business system to run more safely on Azure in the cloud. It was done to improve performance, security, and disaster recovery. The first CSE application in the U.S. to be moved to Azure was the California Department of Children and Family Services. 

Microsoft had 33 people working on the project. They worked closely with California Child Support Services to ensure the move went smoothly. And by January 2022, the entire CSE application was running in Azure.

The JEDI Contract

According to research firm Gartner, the cloud computing industry is expected to grow from USD 480.04 billion in 2022 to USD 1,712.44 billion by 2029. This industry is composed of companies that provide cloud computing services. That’s why the largest cloud computing providers strive for a market share as much as possible.  

An example of this is the Jedi Contract, which is relatively new.

A JEDI (Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure) contract is a deal between the government and a cloud computing company. It is given to a private company that will offer cloud computing services to a government agency. The bid for the JEDI contract was between Microsoft and Amazon. Among them, Microsoft won. But Amazon disagreed with the decision and sued Microsoft. 

The JEDI contract is the latest step the Pentagon (headquarters of the Department of Defense) has taken to move its I.T. operations to the cloud. The Pentagon wanted one company to handle all of its I.T. needs for the military. This company had to be able to handle petabytes of unclassified data every few months. 

The Pentagon gave JEDI to Microsoft for technical reasons, but Amazon said that the Pentagon’s dislike of Amazon influenced the decision. The company said the Trump administration had something to do with the decision. It noted that Trump had told Pentagon officials to give the contract to Microsoft by putting pressure on them. 

Even though a few companies have solved this problem, not many of them can grow to meet the needs of the Pentagon. At first, the contract was worth $10 billion, and only one company was expected to get it. Microsoft won the contract in October and will give the DoD cloud services that are classified and not classified.
